MY TOWN:

If I could build my own town, it would be more like a hamlet as I don't care for crowded spaces. I lived near Birmingham for a few years and I hated it. Too many people, crowding in. No wonder I have claustrophobia in crowds. Years ago, I lived in a small town in the north east of England, called Birtley. (On the Gateshead side of the Tyne.) Since 2006 I have lived in two hamlets just four miles from Aberystwyth. Aber itself is not exactly a large town with a population of 14,640 (in 2021, and depending on whether the university students are here or not). The first hamlet I lived in, Chancery, has just eight houses and a mansion. I now live in Lon Rhyd-y-Gwin, which is built along a farm track. At the end I live on, there are 12 houses, all bungalows. The lane then steeply rises, past an old farmhouse, several sheep farms, single cottages, and livery stables. It's not quite rural, but not urban either, with all those farms.

If I was to build my own town, the heart of it would be the library. It would an old-fashioned library too, with a scary librarian who would not tolerate nonesense and noise. Shhh! There would be lots of nooks and crannies for people to sit and read in peace. Children would be allowed, but they would have to stay in a soundproof room, with a nice, motherly librarian to look after them. There would, of course, be access for people in wheelchairs, and a large collection of audio books for the blind. (I will probaby need that soon enough!) The library would be surrounded by a garden full of trees and flowerbeds. Bird feeders, a bird bath, sundail, and footpaths would be included. It would be part park, part library, and as I said, the absolute centre of the town, as a good library should be.
